about 2 years ago – Tue, Mar 08, 2022 at 02:14:39 PM

Hey Backers,

We’re halfway through the campaign! We’re premiering a video this Thursday, March 10th at 1pm. Ryan and I answer your questions and chat about the Blinks Party Pack. We’ll also be sneaking a huge announcement in this video so be sure to tune in.

Introducing Don’t Croak!

The 5th game in the Party Pack Expansion is finally here. Simultaneous play keeps the game snappy even for big groups (5-12 players). When you wanna be the big frog in a small pond, you trust no one and chaos ensues.

This one will have the whole gang dying of laughter. Here’s Ryan:

To get a feel for how Don't Croak is played, here are some candid clips of gameplay:

See you at the Thursday Premiere

Introducing Peacock!
about 2 years ago – Tue, Mar 01, 2022 at 06:48:09 PM

Hey Backers,

We're excited to reveal the 4th game in the Party Pack expansion. Introducing Peacock!

This is a first of its kind for Blinks. Peacock is a trading game in which you are a rare gem dealer trying to make sure your shop has gems that can't be found anywhere else.  This one's great for dinner parties. Our friends love how quickly this game can be learned, but still provides entertainment for the whole evening.

For some insight on the origins of Peacock, here's Ryan:

A little bird😉 told us that you wanted more footage of gameplay. Please, enjoy the last couple of rounds of Peacock in the following video.

We love hearing your feedback and will continue to add gameplay footage throughout our campaign.

100% Funded!!! Now introducing Mimic
about 2 years ago – Sun, Feb 27, 2022 at 12:34:23 PM

Hey Backers,

100% Funded! Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! We've still got lots of campaign ahead so it is fair to say this party is just getting started!

We love introducing community designed games, a clear majority of Blinks games have come from the incredible game maker community. Our Director of Games will share why Mimic was a top pick for the Party Pack, take it away Ryan:

Interview with the designer of Mimic, Darren Tanner:

Describe your game/gameplay/why people would enjoy this game?

Mimic is a dexterity / reaction party game where you are attempting to follow the instructions displayed on your blinks, surviving longer than your opponents. You'll have two blinks to manage, and each will be asking you to turn, flip or click them. Take too long, or mess it up, and you'll lose a life. You'll also have to keep an eye out for the DJ’s change in tempo - when the beat drops, all your blinks will activate multiple times back to back. It can get quite intense!

What is the Origin Story of your game? How did it come to be?

I first started writing games for the Blinks before my initial packs had arrived. Initially, I was trying to find ways to make them bend to existing board game designs, and writing code in a simulator. Once they arrived however, that went out of the window. There's a really nice tactile nature to the blinks - the feel of the magnets, the click of the button, that I wanted a design to highlight. From that starting point, the game grew fairly organically.

The other aspect I wanted to build into my design was around celebrating being physically close to our friends again (when the time is right!). Mimic is best played with three friends, having a laugh, shoulder to shoulder. Definitely something I'm looking forward to.

What do you like best about Blinks? about developing games on Blinks?

I've been writing code for 34 years, and for that entire time I've been a frustrated game developer. Professionally I chose to go down a different path, but in my spare time I would always have some sort of game project on the go. I was never able to push a project through to a point where I was happy with it though - there was always so much work that needed to be done outside of the core game design part that I was actually interested in. With Blinks your approach has to change - you have a handful of possible inputs, a handful of possible outputs, and a limited amount of memory. All of a sudden, as I thought up ideas for the Blinks, I was finding I could have an idea implemented within an evening. If it didn't feel right, I could put it aside, learn from it, and move on to another. Blinks have enabled me to feel a lot more creative, to actually get my ideas working, and that's been a wonderful experience.

Fun Facts, Strategy, or Easter Eggs in the game.

One of the things that emerged from the design was the ability to play Mimic with my younger kids. By using different shapes, it's possible to customize the difficulty for different players, which meant that I could play with my kids on a more equal footing. Having one of them beat me and describe Mimic as "better than Fortnite" was a fantastic feeling, even if I don't think Epic needs to be too concerned just yet.

The Designer

Mimic is Darren's first game! In the daytime, Darren spends his time wearing a suit (or at least suit pajamas, since the start of the pandemic). At night, he can be found playing board games, often of the more complex or economic variety.

Introducing Lazy Ants
about 2 years ago – Fri, Feb 25, 2022 at 11:20:32 PM

Hey Backers,

This is our first post in a short series introducing the Party Pack games. I’ll let Ryan Courtney, our Director of Games take it from here:

Introducing Lazy Ants

Lazy Ants is a game for 2-8 players all about bluffing and trying to read your opponents. In this game you play as a worker ant trying to meet the Queen’s demands, but in a colony of this size someone is always trying to take credit for your work.

This is one of the first longer form games on the platform (more are coming!) with a game length of around 30 minutes.

Another aspect we really love is the discussion it creates anytime a player attempts to score. It gets all other players at the table working together and negotiating what shenanigans the scorer is up to. But in the end it is still up to one person to make the call and either receive the reward or be punished by the Queen.

Hear from the designer of Lazy Ants, Luke Venables:
